Fall and winter bird feeding can be enjoyable for you and beneficial to the birds. Seed feeders are a good addition to any backyard habitat. At Woodlands Nature Station, we use black oil sunflower seeds. They are widely accepted by most seed eating birds, and smaller birds can open them easily.
When gardening for birds, consider leaving dead plant stalks in place for winter to provide visiting birds shelter in colder months. Birds will benefit from leftover seeds as well.
Help birds from the comfort of your own home by participating in “Project Feederwatch.” This is a great way to learn bird identification and help in a nationwide, citizen science project as well.
Plan a visit to Woodlands Nature Station for gardening ideas that benefit a wide variety of wildlife.
