Natural resources found within Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area are abundant and diverse, including forests, wildlife, and unique plants as well as threatened and endangered species.
Bordered on the east and west by two major rivers, LBL is a 170,000 acre peninsula that is also blanketed on the north by the Ohio River and lies roughly 50 miles west from the Mississippi River. All these specifications make the area desirable to species attracted to rivers and flooded backwaters, such as migrating birds, snakes, and buttonbush.
Habitats in Land Between the Lakes range from aquatic to upland mixed hardwood forests. Staff work to assess and improve these diverse resources, not only through their own knowledge, but through agreements and partnerships that allow for a nationwide reach.
