Supervisor and Closure Orders

Supervisors Orders are federal rules and regulations specific to Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area.

Pursuant to the provisions of 16 U.S.C. and Title 36 C.F.R., the following acts or omissions are prohibited on lands and waters within the legislative jurisdiction of the USDA Forest Service, Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. The area consists of over 170,000 acres of National Forest located in Trigg and Lyon County in Kentucky and Stewart County in Tennessee and is depicted on our motor vehicle use map (MVUM) and official trail maps.

Violation of these prohibitions are punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than 6 months, or both (16 U.S.C. 551 and 18 U.S.C. 3559 and 3571).

Persons exempt from prohibitions include:

  • Any Federal, State, local officer, or member of an organized rescue or fire fighting force engaged in the performance of an official duty.
  • Any authorized person engaged in official administrative duties regarding National Forest Administration.
  • Persons with a permit specifically authorizing the otherwise prohibited act.
  • Persons associated with family cemeteries for legitimate purposes such as ceremonies, maintenance, and visitation may utilize roads designated for cemetery access only.

Report a Violation: Call 877-861-2457

Supervisor Orders are put into effect to address particular management problems. Supervisor Orders may be enacted on several levels, including:

  • Nationally (e.g. from the Washington office and affecting all National Forests)
  • Multi-Regional (e.g. Multi-agency orders)
  • Regional (e.g. Region 8)
  • Recreation Area or Forest (e.g. Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area)
  • District levels (e.g. Ranger Districts)

Supervisor Orders are signed by Regional Foresters and/or Area Supervisors and vary in duration. Supervisors Orders are posted at Forest or Area Supervisors offices. Some of the reasons for implementation of Supervisors Orders is to protect public safety, prevent resource damage, protect a particular area’s setting (such as those areas closed to motorized travel), protect wildlife populations, and many other reasons. Supervisors Orders may prohibit a specific activity or impose permit requirements. Some examples of permits that may be required are day-use, OHV use, camping or hunting permits.
