GOLDEN POND, Ky. (May 11, 2026) — Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area recently partnered with Wounded Warrior Project and the Friends of LBL to host a unique hunting experience at LBL, April 7-9. Six disabled veterans were granted the exclusive opportunity to turkey hunt within LBL’s Elk & Bison Prairie during turkey hunting season. All six veterans returned successful with impressive birds and lasting memories.
“LBL is honored to have hosted these veterans and provide such an historic hunting experience,” said Jim McCoy, LBL Area Supervisor. “I am thrilled with the collaboration to bring this event to fruition and what a sight it was to see the pride and joy on those veterans’ faces. It was a moment LBL will also cherish for years to come.”
Two veterans were accompanied by experienced hunting guides and Forest Service staff each day into the prairie, which was closed to the public for the safety of all involved. Unique challenges faced each of the disabled veterans, but through mentorship and determination, each were able to harvest a bird and enjoy the camaraderie of a close-knit group of hunters.
The success of the event was contributed to the quality of the partnerships involved and the goals of wildlife conservation and veteran support.
“We really appreciate the partnership from the U.S. Forest Service, USDA, and Friends of Land Between the Lakes in making this hunt possible,” said Luke Herbst with Wounded Warrior Project. “Having the chance to spend time outdoors, focus on the hunt, and learn alongside experienced guides means a lot to our veterans. Being able to successfully harvest a turkey makes it even more rewarding—it builds confidence and gives them a real sense of accomplishment. We’re thankful for everyone who helped make it happen.”
